A Lesson From the Trail

2/00 John Bryant State Park

"Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble."

Prov 3:23

Day 1

My weekend has degraded from a weekend backpacking trip to southern Ohio to an overnighter at a state park.  It's a very natural process called 'trip degradation'.  It starts out with my questioning the weather and my choice of using a tarp.  Then it landslides into me questioning my physical abilities in deep snow.  Next thing ya know I'm in full-blown degradation.

My over-caution pays off this time as the deep snow proves to be very taxing.  [I'm hoping to find a nice used pair of snow shoes in the off season.]  I spent a lot of time walking the upper gorge taking pictures.  The features of Clifton Gorge are so "unOhio".  It is very refreshing.  So refreshing that it attracts every single person in the area.  This place gets so many visitors it's scary.

I spent a lot of time melting snow and contemplating the issues of the day.  In fact I spent hours just standing in camp thinking.  I find it ironic how we exert so much energy in finding the closest parking space to the store and racing from one warm place to the other, then I find myself standing in 29 degree, snowy weather watching snow melt in an aluminum pot and needing no other entertainment.  LOL!  I thank God I have found such an outlet!

Day 2

It snowed off and on all night and every once in awhile the snow would slide down the walls of the Nebo.  Every time making the walls sag just a bit more.  By morning all the walls were sagging so bad that the interior area was reduced by 1/3.  This fact combined with the pain in the ass of trying to keep powdery snow out of everything, I have come to the conclusion that snow camping will be done with the 'Helix' from now on.  The Nebo works fine with no snow but from here on out...SNOW = TENT.

I feel like crap.  I eat breakfast and go home.  Everything is harder in the snow.  I love winter weather and am very thankful for it.  I learned a lot about my limitations and gained a lot of knowledge for next winter.  But for now...screw this!  I'm going home and have a nice hot shower!
