A Lesson From the Trail

3/99 Tar Hollow

"It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman."

Prov 21:19

Day 1

Went to Tar Hollow with the plan to camp at the fire tower and day hike the south loop.  Because I didn't get off work until 3PM I didn't get to the trail head until 5:30 PM and into camp until 7 PM.

This trip was destined to be a bad one.  I forgot to stop and buy batteries for my Zipp Stove!  I melted water over the camp fire and cooked over the fire too.  The dehydrated spaghetti was kick-ass.  The water that I melted over the fire from snow was so smoky and nasty I couldn't drink it.  I was so dehydrated that my muscles were cramping all night.  My plastic ground sheet is WAY too slick for snow.  I just got up and went home the next morning.

Total Miles: 3

[This was one of those crappy trips that are so vital to the learning process.  I learned a lot from this trip.  I learned how to properly cook over a fire; always over coals and not the fire.  I have always used a stove and not a fire.  I learned that my Nebo Pyramid tarp/tent is not the best thing for snow camping.  And I learned that you HAVE TO DRINK WATER.  I learned that a packing list is vital.  This last lesson has not been learned to this day as I still never use one.
