6/99 Vesuvius Lake Trail Day 1 I'm doing a couple hikes to get ready for the llama hike in August and wanted to go back to Vesuvius to see if it was any better than the first time I was there [the first time I hiked at Vesuvius it was a cold, rainy winter weekend. The whole weekend was just gray and unhappy and I didn't enjoy the trail because it seemed so ugly.]. It was much better. Quite beautiful in fact. I did 4 miles past the beach and camped in a little pine glen. It was so quiet and peaceful there. I sat on a log reading a book as the sun set. As the sun went down I began seeing small squirrels flitting about and discovered they were flying squirrels! I sat and watched them fly around until it became too dark to see them. I have never seen flying squirrels before and this was one of the greatest evenings I've ever spent on the trail, getting to see such shy creatures. It rained half the night and was so muggy in the tent. Day 2 Started out the day with a good amount of water and wasn't worried about water. The water went fast and all the creeks were dry. I have never been so thirsty in all my life! I did the 8 mile loop away from the lake and then all the way back to the beach with no water. It sucked! The trail was great and I plan on coming back this fall. Total Miles: 16 |
