Burr Oak State Park Contact: 10220 Burr Oak Lodge Road Glouster, OH 45732 (740)767-3570 Park Office
Description: This state park has over 28 miles of hiking trails that include part of the Buckeye Trail. A 18 mile loop trail circles the lake and has primitive camp sites along the way. These camp sites are not very nice as they are located at boat ramps and are also used by kar kampers. The park rangers seam to be very sympathetic to this problem and they will let you use the group camp ground that is located about 1/3 of the way around the lake. A second nights camp can be made by taking the connector trail over to the WildCat Hollow Trail where you can camp anywhere. Of course all this can be avoided by simply making LNT "gorilla camps". This is a very nice trail for the most part. There is no shortage of water and there is rarely anyone else on the trail. The park did do some rerouting of the trail and "improved the trail" on the north side of the lake by running a bulldozer through the woods. this sucks on more than one level. First, the bulldozer can go straight up and over hills without even thinking what this does to hikers, much less what it does to trail erosion. The tracks that bulldozer leaves are very bad on the ankles and are fatiguing to boot. The last time I was there, there was a group from a mountain biking association that was looking at maintaining and consulting on the completion of the trail. Weather you like bikers or not there is no mistaking that they know how to build and maintain trails for the least amount of erosion. I hope they get VERY evolved at Burr Oak Lake. |
