A Lesson From the Trail

Sleepin' Gear

"I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makes me dwell in safety."

Ps 4:8

When it comes to sleeping bags and pads I choose whatever is the simplest and lightest.  I don't care if it's down or synthetic.  As long as it's light.  I used to use a wool blanket but Nigal got to feelin' bad for me and gave me one of his bags and one of them new fangled sleepin' pads called a Z Rest.  He said it cost him $50 so I'm very thankful to him for giving it to me.

"[Snicker, snicker]!"

"What?"

Because I dirtbag mostly in the summer I'm not needing anything too warm, just enough to keep the 3 AM chill off.  Although one time when I knew it was going to be cold I sneaked away with Nigal's Western Mountaineers bag for the weekend...don't tell him though.

"I saw that Dirtbag!  Did you think I wasn't going to read your pages or something?  Am I going to have to start locking my basement again?"

"Ah, um, I didn't mean nothin' by it.  It was cold!  What did ya expect me to do, freeze?  It is a nice bag, all be it a bit over priced."

"Well I just hope you didn't pee in it like you do yours."

"Hey!  I can't help it I was born with a weak bladder!"

Anyhow, for most summer trips I just use a fleece bag or borrow Nigal's Slumberjack summer bag.  It's all fancy and in the shape of a mummy!  Very cool!

As far as the pad goes I don't use it much because I like to sleep off the ground in a hammock and don't need the pad that much.  The pad is pretty comfortable and a lot better than just sleeping on the ground.  I thought the full length was a bit overkill so I cut about 1/4 of it off and now it only weighs about 7 oz. and works just fine. You really don't have to have a pad if you sleep on a pile of leaves and duff.  Besides, dead leaves and dirt smell soooo good!  I use a lawn and leaf bag cut down the sides and unfolded as a ground cloth.  It gives the vapor barrier that you need and it weighs next to nothing.  I just stick a small stick in each corner to hold it in place.
