A Lesson From the Trail

Clothes

"neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes."

Mat.24:18

I don't really care that much about clothes.  The only thing I refuse to do is to give up my hat and my Dale Earnhardt shirt.  A guy's got to draw the line somewhere.

Footwear

I've hiked in everything from Grannies combat boots to sandals.  They all have their good points and their bad points.  I don't care for the heavy boots any more because they cause blisters and if I'm not carrying very much I shouldn't need a heavy boot.  Most of the summer trips I like just a good light pair of K Mart tennies.  Anything that will dry fast and last a good long time.  The cheaper the better.

Pants/Shorts

If I had my choice I'd hike every hike in my good old Carhart bibs but they rub me the wrong way.  I have adopted Nigal's method for pants and shorts.  I think it looks a bit goofy and make me look like one of them yuppy hikers but it is more comfortable for me.  I don't need the expensive brands like he does though.  Just any old cheap pair of light pants and shorts will work.  I like the stuff from WallyWorld myself.

Shirts

Like I said before...there's only one shirt for me and that's the same one I wear every day of my adult life; the good ol' Dale Earnhart t- shirt.  It's fashionable, stylish and lets face facts, Dale kicks ass!  An' if any a you Jeff Gordon fans gotta problem with that please turn your monitor off and promptly smash your head into the screen. Ol' Gordon's gay ya know!  Heehee!  If it's a bit chilly on the trip I like an old flannel shirt for the evenings.  A light wool is best but regular will work too if it's dry.

Jackets/Coats

If it gets any colder than a flannel shirt can handle I like a heavier wool shirt or sweater over that.  I do like some of this new fangled fleece stuff they got out now too.  If I need any more than that I will put on the old poncho as a wind breaker.  If that still don't work I'll be at home watchin' the Pro Bowlers Tour on the TV 'cause it's too darn cold to go hikin' anyhow.

Rain Gear

For me there is but one choice for rain gear and that is the good ol' poncho.  No stupid umbrellas, no fancy Gore Tex stuff, just a good light poncho.  A good lighter weight poncho is a lawn and leaf bag with holes cut for the head and the arms.  Don't laugh, it works!  If it's the middle of summer and hot I don't even put the poncho on, I just keep hikin' in the rain.  It's very relaxing ya know.

Hats

My only head gear for the trail is my good ol' boony hat.  It keeps the sun outta my eyes and off my ears and face and it makes me look cool too.  My everyday hat is a Red Man chewing tobacco hat or my rebel flag hat but it's not to popular with these Buckeyes up here.  If it gets too cold for just the boony I'll put my New Orleans Saints stocking hat on under the boony.  Hey!  What you got against the Saints?  Stop snickerin' at me!
