A Lesson From the Trail

East Fork State Park

Description:  This state park has a 12 mile backpack trail and also a 37 mile horse/hiker trail that circumvents the whole reservoir.  There is also a five mile bike trail.  There are backcountry primitive camp sites located along both trails.  This park has won a Dirtbagger's Deluxe Award!  The prestigious "Worst Maps in the State Award"!  They publish a little park newspaper that contains the registration slip and map for backpackers.  this is the worst map I have ever used.  It is so inaccurate that it is more dangerous to use the map than it is to hit the trail with no map at all.  There are only about 1/2 of the road crossings on the map as there actually are on the trail.  I have been frustrated to cursing on this trail due to the horrendous maps.  Do not go to this trail without additional maps!

This is a rugged trail and well worth doing.  I have seen very few people on this trail and never have a hard time finding solitude here.  When you begin to reach the worth side of the lake where there are additional horse trails be very careful to follow your map carefully as it is easy to get lost among the horse trails.  this is spoken from personal experiences!
