Vesuvious Area (Wyane N.F.) Contact: Wayne National Forest Ironton Ranger District 6518 State Route 93 Pedro, OH 45659 (740)534-6500 TTY(740)534-6568 Fax (740)534-6565
Description: This area has over 46 miles of bridal/hiking trails and 24 miles of hiker only trails. This is a very nice place to backpack. A good deal of the trail follows over looks on the lake and it is not too rugged but you still know you've been hiking when you're done. One of the greatest experiences I've ever had happened here whole camping in a small pine stand. I was sitting around camp as dusk was falling and I started to notice small flying squirrels flitting from tree to tree. At first I thought they were bats the way they glided so far from tree to tree. I watched them for an hour or so until it was too dark to see. If you plan on doing the whole trail including the loop that leads away from the lake load up on water before you start the loop. I spent one of the driest 12 mile days of my life on this loop because there was no water sources besides the lake. All the creeks were dry. This trail is especially nice in October when the leaves are peaking.
