A Lesson From the Trail

Where to Go?

When I began this site and made the decision that I would share my trail journals with readers it was in the attempt to give folks from my area a bit of information about where I like to hike in hopes that they too could go there and enjoy it.  My trail journals don't achieve this well as they are more about what my trip was like and what I was thinking at the time.  I have never really thought about doing a trail database because all the info is out there for the finding, but I have found that in order to hunt down all the info you have to go through about three or four different government agencies and a lot of great info can be lost in the shuffle.

The following list is not a list of hikes I have done myself (YET!) but just a list that I have been able to compile.  There are many more hikes than just this list but I wanted to confine the list to backpacking trails and long day hikes of at least 6-7 miles.  If I have hiked in the area mentioned I'll have an (*) beside the name of the trail/area and will give my experiences, opinions, and general thoughts on the area.

Some of the info covered in certain parks are covered twice due to the fact that they are contained within a state forest.  In some cases sate forests hold many more miles of trails than the state park may specify due to the fact that state forests often contain horse trails in addition to hiking trails.  I found that there are hundreds of miles of trail available to the hiker if they are willing to forego the negative image of a horse trail.  It is a resource that is available to hikers and should be taken advantage of.

The information that I'll give will be:

  • Address of the park's offices with contact number where maps and additional info can be found.

  • Basic description of the area as provided by the park with approximately number of miles of trail found in the area.

  • Web address of any maps that are offered by the park.  Most of the State run parks have no maps but if you contact the park office they will mail out a map with info.  If I happen to have any map that is not found on the web I will scan it and try to get it up on the page.

  • Topo maps of the area as they are found on TopoZone.com.  TopoZone.com is a great resource for checking out the general area and it's contours.  Depending on your printer's quality you can print of impromptu maps to supplement the maps provided by the individual parks.

  • Any on-line directions as they are presented by the park's web site.

  • The park's web page.
