Zeleski State Forest Contact: P.O. Box 330, S.R. 278 Zaleski, Ohio 45698-0330 740-596-5781
Description: If I had to pick a single "best all around hike" Zeleski would be it. It is just right. It's rugged enough to make you sleep like a baby at the end of the day and there is lots to see. The state has put together a great pamphlet for this trail complete with an interpretive description of significant areas along the trail. There old roads, graveyards, geological findings, rock formations/caves and cliffs. The area even boasts of it's own ghost! there is an abandoned railroad bed that is said to be haunted by the ghost of a brakeman that was killed on the tracks. It is said that on rainy nights you can see the flickering, swinging lantern of the ghost on the tracks. There is a ghost town named Moonville and the Moonville tunnel is still there and can be visited by walking down the rail bed a miles or so and crossing about three streams. It is neat to check out but I was unable to find the actual site of the town. The sand stone boulders and hanging caves are neat to see because it's not what you would think you'd find in Ohio. There is a large overhang/cave on the connector trail between the south loop and the middle loop that is just such a perfect spot to stop for whatever reason you can find; lunch, dinner, a nap, whatever! If you come to Ohio this is the one trail that must be done!
